Angioplasty
Angioplasty is a technique that consists in introducing a catheter thru the femoral artery, near the groin, in order to reach the coronary artery to widen a narrowed or blocked blood vessel, typically the result of an atherosclerosis. The tip of the catheter has a tightly folded balloon that once it reaches the obstructed artery, it will be inflated to a specific pressure to unblock and reestablish normal blood flow.
Types of Angioplasties
- Peripheral angioplasty. Widening procedure to open blood vessels other than the coronary arteries. It’s most commonly used to treat blockages in the leg arteries, and it can also be used to treat narrowing veins.
- Coronary angioplasty. It’s therapeutic procedure to treat narrowed coronary arteries of the heart found in coronary heart disease. These blockages are due to the buildup of cholesterol-laden plaques that form due to atherosclerosis.
- Renal artery angioplasty. Atherosclerotic obstruction of the renal artery can be treated with angioplasty of the renal artery.
- Carotid angioplasty. Stenting procedure to expand and help maintain an open circulatory blood flow. The system comprises a stent along with an embolic capture device designed to reduce or trap emboli and clot debris.
All of these procedures are professionally and successfully performed by highly qualified cardiologist at Centro Médico Excel.
